Saturday, September 17, 2022 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at St. Mary's University in McGivney Hall.
Traditionally, the SSVP holds an "Ozanam Day" (named in honour of their founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam) as a day of spiritual reflection and renewal. This year, the SSVP is partnering with StMU to make this event broader and more collaborative. The result is a day-long conference that will focus on the SSVP's yearly theme of "Hunger."
As societal and financial pressures increase, many Calgarians are struggling with the reality of food scarcity. Beyond the lack of food, the prism of hunger relates to our need to find meaning in suffering, our ability to connect with others in need, and our ability to ensure the provision of food for all.
We invite ALL concerned members of our community to journey with us throughout the day:
To see the reality of food scarcity and how hunger affects real people in Calgary,
To judge our need to respond
To act in collaboration with community partners to best address these pressing social problems
The day will include:
Catholic Mass and spiritual reflection (this is optional to attend from 9:00 - 10:00 am)
Presentations by local non-profit organizations (Catholic and secular) that work on the front lines of our community with marginalized populations
Keynote address by Derek Cook (Director of the Canadian Poverty Institute, Ambrose University) to discuss his new book The Art of Hope: Healing the Wounded City
Ultimately, the goal of this day-long workshop is to empower participants to creatively work with one another to address the pressing problem of hunger in our city.
